Top rated in Aoyama & Shibuya
Aoyama and Shibuya mix two Michelin star tasting menus with places that cost a fraction as much. Den in Jingumae is the most fun of the serious restaurants: Zaiyu Hasegawa opens with a monaka wafer of miso and foie gras and sends out a stuffed fried chicken wing in a takeaway style box. Narisawa, in Minamiaoyama, cooks what Yoshihiro Narisawa calls satoyama cuisine, on lacquerware and washi. Sassa, in Hiro, serves kaiseki with a sushi chef's timing and an abalone risotto, and EWIG pours its heart into Austrian cooking, with a foie gras terrine that nods to Sachertorte. The cheaper end is just as specific. Maisen fries tonkatsu in a former public bathhouse near Omotesando, and Narukiyo runs a basement izakaya with a handwritten menu and tatami seats. Two wards, one consistent habit of doing one thing well. This is an early list, opening for diner votes, and positions cannot be bought.
