  • We first heard about David Lai and Neighborhood from his appearance on Chinese cooking competition show 一饭封神 and this restaurant has been on our list ever since. Mable was our server tonight and she was such a delight, saw other reviewers rave about her and it’s true she’s fantastic. She recommended the Caesar Salad, Baby Squid, and Black Sausage Fried Egg, and also Italian white wine pairing, and they were all excellent. We also picked the Rockfish French Onion Soup which was also well done. The Caesar Salad is perfectly dressed and includes anchovies and a fried pork fat crouton for a very unique yet balanced flavor/texture profile, you do have to try it. The Baby Squid is supposedly the most popular but frankly was too oily and not that impressive, but it was fresh. We also pre-ordered the salt-baked half chicken mushroom rice, David Lai’s signature dish so must try, the chicken is cooked well and not too salty, the rice is packed with flavor and got the nice pan crisp to it, definitely a great choice. My absolute favorite was the black sausage fried egg. The sausage is more like a meat hash, packed with flavor and soft texture, with the runny egg was definitely the most memorable pairing. With some white rice it could be a premium loco moco, if you know what that is! haha The space is small but this is Hong Kong, you know the deal. The interior decor is nice, clean, and well put together, I thought it was perfectly fine. I hope to come back again soon and try different menu items as well!

  • I’m the kind of diner who will give credit where credit is due. Given that this is a Michelin restaurant, I expected the overall environment and presentation to be a bit more consistently polished. The restaurant is beautiful and tucked away from the main street, making it a great setting for an intimate dinner. However, I noticed that certain areas were not as tidy as I would expect—for example, the bar table we were greeted with appeared messy (with cutlery left in a blue plastic tub, which looked either unpacked for service or not yet cleared). This was my first impression, and it unfortunately set a slightly negative tone. In terms of the menu, it is impressively diverse. That said, I found that while the variety is strong, the menu lacked a sense of genuine surprise or standout moments across several courses. For the beef tartare, the concept felt promising, but the presentation did not meet my expectations. As shown in the first photo, the meat appeared quite grey, and the preparation for the mushroom element felt minimal—overall, the dish looked less vibrant than I would expect from a restaurant of this standard. The squid was fine, but it was noticeably too oily. The black sausage, however, was an absolute highlight—I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very well executed in terms of flavor. My only concern is the presentation, which felt a bit informal and not aligned with the polished expectations I associate with Michelin-level dining. The pasta was truly excellent in taste, but the portion size felt quite small for the value and experience. The chicken course was exceptional. I loved everything about it, and it was the only dish where I had no notes. It was a standout and would earn a full 10/10 from my perspective. Desserts were mixed. The chocolate mousse had a disappointing presentation. The French toast, on the other hand, was incredible. Overall, I enjoyed several courses and appreciated the culinary effort—especially the chicken and black sausage. I hope this feedback is received in the constructive spirit intended, as I believe a few adjustments in consistency, cleanliness, and plating would elevate the experience further.

  • Food wise if compare with other same price level restaurants then it is quite ordinary, barely meet the standard, if it is compared to all other bistro in HK then it is outstanding. Our favorite dish will be the pigeon, it would be nice if after they cook they can remove the herbs on the pigeon so it has a nicer texture. The baked chicken is definitely much better than the kinki paella. The warm vegetables are not bad. The hidden menu of the day (asparagus with shrimp and razor clams) was pretty good. The kinki fish paella, one of us hated the paella, the other find it just acceptable, it would be nice if they have just baked that kinki fish and serve it without the paella rice, maybe it will goes better with potatoes etc. The complementary Canelé is very good.” Service wise is a mix feeling, we had one very nice and helpful waitress, but others are pretty cold and distant…….atmosphere is quite nice for a bistro…….location wise the restaurant is very difficult to find therefore we make a video, it is hidden in a small alley in the middle of the stair case, their Google address will lead you to a flower shop which is not helpful at all, since they are a quite famous hidden bistro in HK it will be helpful if they can put up a sign in the street to point the guests in the right direction……….

  • Food was good but nothing to write home about—no "wow" dish here. The biggest downside was the layout; tables are so close together that you’re essentially part of your neighbor's conversation. They certainly live up to the name "Neighborhood," but maybe a bit too literally for a Michelin-starred experience.
